Green Roofing the Job Creator

How responsible are we for the future of our own country? If you were to ask me we are all responsible to do what we can. If you are an American and reading this blog you know the dire situation that exists regarding employment and opportunity for Americans with great work ethic but average education. Too many media outlets pitch us on the need for better trained and better educated workers. They claim that America cannot fill complex jobs that require advanced skills. The media also claims that there will not be more manual labor jobs in the coming years for America. I strongly disagree based on the surge in interest in sustainable construction and the payback I see that can yield from Green roofing. Green roofing is not about anything more than putting vegetation on a roof surface. The paybacks are huge measured by cost savings in cooling and in heating. It works like this. You create a great waterproof membrane . Can you do that? Can you do it on flat and sloped surfaces? Yes, of course you can. Now the next thing you have to do is think about how you would go about protecting that membrane… Read More →

Management style and Roof Leaks on the computer.

So I just had a programmer quit on me because I told him about a problem and  used an analogy of “you have a roof leak ” regarding a malfunction of the software that they he was writing with a team of programmers. Basically I was testing the software that is supposed to make the roofing industry easier to manage and well It did not work. When I am given money to fix a roof it is personal. I take pride in my work and when something goes awry I am on it. If I have a leak at anytime at any hour I am there to fix it or I move my resources to that event in a rapid response. Now I know that the audience response here from some of you is that if you do the job right the first time therefor you do not have any leaks. I can only say to that …..who cares ….. you are the perfect roofer… not me I am human. Now getting back to these programmers and my history with software. In 1993 I had the idea of starting an internet auction . Yes long before Ebay. I took the… Read More →

My toughest leak.

When it comes to roof leaks even the old guys can sometimes get it wrong. I am posting here because I do truly care about my workmanship. It keeps me up at night and it is never good enough for me. I insist on working with people that have knowledge and patience. Sometimes like in this case I really needed a patient customer. I can only say thank you to this elderly woman in this home. It took me months to figure this one out. I wish I just wrote he a check when I came to this job but sometimes that is just the way it goes. One lesson I learned on this is just tear off the roof and start over when there is a super tricky leak. We thought we had it here. But we did not. Finally after full tear off we got it right finding that the leaks were indeed coming right through the brick and finding its way to the bottom of the plywood. Take a Dump on Allied Building Products

Nothing can upset me more than going to a restaurant that sells highly digestive food and does not have a bathroom. I often startle people when I ask the local restaurant and walk out after I find out that they have no bathroom. I have been known to stay up on the roof and keep banging away regardless of my intestinal pains knowing that I would be stopping in at the supply house so I could let loose of some fury in a comfortable location. My favorite store as a matter of fact is Home Depot. I like Home depot not for their prices on roof shingles. I like Home Depot for their clean bathrooms and the fact that I do not have to deal with some salesman behind a high counter that does not really know the products or the roofing business. I will keep this quite simple. I am currently listening to a marketing guru Anthony Sarno former Lucent executive. He has been kind to me in leading me through the maze of internet marketing. We discuss marketing and sales and we were chatting about what I was recently pissed off about. No pun intended. I explained how… Read More →

Google invents the roofing robot, perfect roofs.

Google with all their money from Adword’s has stepped up to get involved with the roofing business.  Google has created roofing robots, all nameless and not necessarily evaluated by the customers they serve.  Now don’t get too excited especially you roofers that worry about the pounds of sweat you have given to performing top quality workmanship. Google with all their money has simply turned you into a robot. You see Google has decided that you rogue men do not deserve to receive reviews published by your customers or to have your customers rate your work . Hmmm you see Google Adword’s and its novelty has worn off. Contractors no longer get the return they used to get from running Adword’s as most customers want to find someone that is in the meat of the search. they don’t want paid for ads of contractors boasting about how great they are. Customers, your customers, want to know what other customers are saying, Did you return if there was a leak, was the work done on time, did your men pee in the bushes? You know stuff like that. Did you know that none of the geniuses at Google have ever made pee… Read More →

Bayonne NJ praying on the roof

Lets put it this way . When you roof you might as well rock climb. Here is a job in which we need to remove 3 layers of roofing and then climb mount Everest. Now I have reported from other compoanies jobs but this is the way I work. Notice the safety belts. This completely gives new confidence.and it is the best thing any contractor can do for safety and their men. The best roofers are real roofers. The only real roofer is a safe roofer. And the boss should buy lunch too.

Jersey City Roofers , Deal with Blown off Shingles

When it comes to storms , Sandy was a doozy. What we are finding are many roofs that have had their shingles blown off. Not too surprising we are finding roofs that are three layers thick and nailed into old wood shake shingles. Through the years in urban areas countless small contractors try to survive. The neighborhoods are full of recent immigrants that just try to get by, The city of Jersey City is historic, It has been here for 100’s of years. Neighborhoods were ethnic and it has been a city of corruption. Any city is corrupt usually because its people are corrupt. The roofers that try to make it in these areas always are conditioned to serve people by bringing them the lowest cost that will do the job. It is usually a market condition and the customers rarely give the opportunity to explain the quality differences . A storm often uncovers many secrets and Sandy was no different. Countless roofs have been hiding the extra weight from cover overs, Countless roofs have been put down just barely to code. It is time for Jersey City to step up to quality and start top listen. The Irish, Germans… Read More →
