Athletes , Teammates and Roofing

February 26, 2015 New Orleans: Sometimes you get to play with the big boys. Sometimes you become the old wise roofer and you get to be looked up to. The International roofing expo was a great chance to get a birds eye view of your peers and for me an opportunity to share and perhaps mentor. Like other industries that are traditional small business industries the roofing industry can be a great place where you can support a family if you put in enough effort. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) has shown a concern for the image of the industry. Worried that the image of what a roofer “is” could be in jeopardy, they have begun to create a campaign to inform more potential roofers of a profile that fits. Earlier today when speaking with Bill Good President and Chairman of The NRCA we discussed how roofers tend to be either athletes or outdoors people. Here is an example of some new people that are in the New roofing industry. I randomly had the opportunity to meet Juan and Phil partners in a roofing business. Two former College Basketball Stars who become good friends that they can trust on… Read More →

Respect a Currency that crosses borders or into life.

I told you I am an old roofer many times before. I am just now after 35 years beginning to figure out why I am a roofer. Yes I am driven and I am good at what I do. In search of a reason for being on the roof all this time I recognize that all I ever wanted is respect. I think most of the people up on the roof are looking for respect as well. People say I am crazy as a loon, cause i get up on the roof and find peace. You know I ain’t asking nobody for nothing, I cannot get on my own, except what I am about to tell you.   Nobody can give themselves one thing, a little respect This is a true story no one’s name has been changed to protect the guilty. This is the behavior quite standard in the construction industry. Take note of this or pay the price. Location: Allied Building Products route 17 East Rutherford NJ, 12:00 pm January ?, 2014. Task :Pick -up 1 can of Sonoguard waterproofing for use on a box gutter that we were sealing in Jersey City, NJ . Time… Read More →

Roofer, Have you seen Pete ?

The following I will consider the first short blog of a series called WITABAR short for “When I think about being a roofer” So welcome to my mind and my memory as a roofer.   WITABAR- “When I think about being a roofer” Story number 1, “Have you seen Pete?” I couldn’t tell you exactly how I became so rich. I lived in a big house, about 6000 square feet all brick and it looked like me.   I remember waking and looking over the grand foyer in amazement of what I had accomplished. Although beautiful in spatial feature it made me feel doomed. I had dealt with a tumultuous time over the last few years attempting to challenge an understanding of the trauma I had experienced. Miles of hills I felt I climbed trying to reinvent myself falling right back to lower than where I started. I was back in roofing , the jobs were smaller, the men were troubled , less talented, and I was just scared to death every waken and sleepful moment. I pushed myself each day because I loved my children but there were tears behind my eyes as i struggled with it all. On… Read More →

Gutters size matters

There are a few papers written on the size of gutter that should be used. I never have these papers in hand when I determine that a gutter is the wrong size. I live by a simple rule when it comes to gutter size. Some may argue but most houses will agree. Bigger is Better! Gutters size   Let me make it simple for you. How to find the right gutter size? 2×3 leaders should be used with 5 inch gutter on houses with roof square footage under 2500 square feet. 3×4 leaders can be used with 5 inch gutter that have have runs greater than 40 feet and are collecting water from roofs 1500 square feet and greater 4×5 are generally used for commericial flat roofs with areas greater than 1500 square feet. 5 inch gutters use these on small houses with small fascias. 6 inch gutters Large profile these gutters are not aesthetic on small houses at 1 story but that can work on smaller houses above 20 feet from the ground. These gutters are large and can carry water from roof areas 2000 square feet to 6000 square feet with a number of large leaders at least… Read More →

I am not sure how many of the roofers across the country know how to lead in a drain. I am also not sure how many actually lead in modified bitumen roofs but they certainly should. I would like to hear from roofers across the country to determine what methods they are using when installing modified roof systems . Below please find an informational video that should help you all with the basics.   Please post your comments

Management style and Roof Leaks on the computer.

So I just had a programmer quit on me because I told him about a problem and  used an analogy of “you have a roof leak ” regarding a malfunction of the software that they he was writing with a team of programmers. Basically I was testing the software that is supposed to make the roofing industry easier to manage and well It did not work. When I am given money to fix a roof it is personal. I take pride in my work and when something goes awry I am on it. If I have a leak at anytime at any hour I am there to fix it or I move my resources to that event in a rapid response. Now I know that the audience response here from some of you is that if you do the job right the first time therefor you do not have any leaks. I can only say to that …..who cares ….. you are the perfect roofer… not me I am human. Now getting back to these programmers and my history with software. In 1993 I had the idea of starting an internet auction . Yes long before Ebay. I took the… Read More →

If I had the courage.

Roofers tend to carry a heavy load far past the trucks and up the ladder. It seems these guys always have something on their mind. I am no different even though I must seem spectacular and perfect to you. I have my issues, no no I am not lying . I do have issues.  I face challenges like everyone does. Sometimes I think that roofing is my purgatory, sort of a community service for something I did that I cannot remember. I remember a guy named Dale came into my office one day with another guy they nicknamed Batman.  They called him Batman because he had an old Cadillac with those huge fins on the back and he had hand painted a formerly yellow car Black. Back to the story. Dale came in and basically said that the two if them were great roofers. Torch down was their specialty. I was jammed with work so I figured what the heck hiring people was just such a crap shoot I might as well give them a chance.  They both came to work and I assigned them a truck and ordered rolls and propane and had the material delivered to the roof…. My toughest leak.

When it comes to roof leaks even the old guys can sometimes get it wrong. I am posting here because I do truly care about my workmanship. It keeps me up at night and it is never good enough for me. I insist on working with people that have knowledge and patience. Sometimes like in this case I really needed a patient customer. I can only say thank you to this elderly woman in this home. It took me months to figure this one out. I wish I just wrote he a check when I came to this job but sometimes that is just the way it goes. One lesson I learned on this is just tear off the roof and start over when there is a super tricky leak. We thought we had it here. But we did not. Finally after full tear off we got it right finding that the leaks were indeed coming right through the brick and finding its way to the bottom of the plywood. Take a Dump on Allied Building Products

Nothing can upset me more than going to a restaurant that sells highly digestive food and does not have a bathroom. I often startle people when I ask the local restaurant and walk out after I find out that they have no bathroom. I have been known to stay up on the roof and keep banging away regardless of my intestinal pains knowing that I would be stopping in at the supply house so I could let loose of some fury in a comfortable location. My favorite store as a matter of fact is Home Depot. I like Home depot not for their prices on roof shingles. I like Home Depot for their clean bathrooms and the fact that I do not have to deal with some salesman behind a high counter that does not really know the products or the roofing business. I will keep this quite simple. I am currently listening to a marketing guru Anthony Sarno former Lucent executive. He has been kind to me in leading me through the maze of internet marketing. We discuss marketing and sales and we were chatting about what I was recently pissed off about. No pun intended. I explained how… Read More →
