Observation from the Roof Consultants Institute convention

The roof consultants institute is holding their annual trade show and educational seminar. 63 new registered roof observers this year, no one passed the roof consultants test this year. The RCI organization reported that they had 9 new registered waterproofing consultants in a year. 13 new registered exterior wall consultants, 9 building envelope consultants in the entire year. The RCI has now over 3000 members, 1200 of the 3000 are consultants the balance are contractors or manufacturers. What I observed most about the attendees of the convention was the following: 1. The group is very professional 2. The group is very sincere and interested in good roofing. 3. No one seems competitive because the demand for their services is so high. 4. Professional engineers and Architects respect the none degree holding Consultants equally as peers. 5. The industry does not have a twitter account and has not embraced data mining from the massive roofing industry 6. Thankfully suppliers are absent from the convention and have little influence over the RCI institute 7. The RCI convention has very few supporting contractors attend the event. 8. Most attendees of the convention comment that nothing seems new nd that innovation in the industry… Read More →

Angel Investors Roofers

Can a Roofer be like Angel Investors? Yes ! So there is this guy ( Angel investors ) that invested $500,000 in Facebook and cashed out at well over $300,000,000 , that is millions for you roofers. His investment came right when you were buying that $60,000 dollar truck that was going to last you ten years and continue making you money for the next ten years. I guess I am talking about the big “what if” here. What if you were one of the Angel investors? At the time of his investment he already knew that there were other investors behind Facebook. He evaluated the scheme and jumped in. The rest is history. I guess you are thinking right now that it is a lucky thing that Facebook started because now you have 32 likes on your page, although they are just from other roofers. Then came Yelp, now here is a company that had a real innovation. They decided to let customers review small businesses like yours. The harder you work the more money Yelp makes. Their software development at my guess probably cost $40,000 to put together and another $250,000 in marketing effort. Yelp is now worth… Read More →

Management style and Roof Leaks on the computer.

So I just had a programmer quit on me because I told him about a problem and  used an analogy of “you have a roof leak ” regarding a malfunction of the software that they he was writing with a team of programmers. Basically I was testing the software that is supposed to make the roofing industry easier to manage and well It did not work. When I am given money to fix a roof it is personal. I take pride in my work and when something goes awry I am on it. If I have a leak at anytime at any hour I am there to fix it or I move my resources to that event in a rapid response. Now I know that the audience response here from some of you is that if you do the job right the first time therefor you do not have any leaks. I can only say to that …..who cares ….. you are the perfect roofer… not me I am human. Now getting back to these programmers and my history with software. In 1993 I had the idea of starting an internet auction . Yes long before Ebay. I took the… Read More →

If I had the courage.

Roofers tend to carry a heavy load far past the trucks and up the ladder. It seems these guys always have something on their mind. I am no different even though I must seem spectacular and perfect to you. I have my issues, no no I am not lying . I do have issues.  I face challenges like everyone does. Sometimes I think that roofing is my purgatory, sort of a community service for something I did that I cannot remember. I remember a guy named Dale came into my office one day with another guy they nicknamed Batman.  They called him Batman because he had an old Cadillac with those huge fins on the back and he had hand painted a formerly yellow car Black. Back to the story. Dale came in and basically said that the two if them were great roofers. Torch down was their specialty. I was jammed with work so I figured what the heck hiring people was just such a crap shoot I might as well give them a chance.  They both came to work and I assigned them a truck and ordered rolls and propane and had the material delivered to the roof…. My toughest leak.

When it comes to roof leaks even the old guys can sometimes get it wrong. I am posting here because I do truly care about my workmanship. It keeps me up at night and it is never good enough for me. I insist on working with people that have knowledge and patience. Sometimes like in this case I really needed a patient customer. I can only say thank you to this elderly woman in this home. It took me months to figure this one out. I wish I just wrote he a check when I came to this job but sometimes that is just the way it goes. One lesson I learned on this is just tear off the roof and start over when there is a super tricky leak. We thought we had it here. But we did not. Finally after full tear off we got it right finding that the leaks were indeed coming right through the brick and finding its way to the bottom of the plywood. Take a Dump on Allied Building Products

Nothing can upset me more than going to a restaurant that sells highly digestive food and does not have a bathroom. I often startle people when I ask the local restaurant and walk out after I find out that they have no bathroom. I have been known to stay up on the roof and keep banging away regardless of my intestinal pains knowing that I would be stopping in at the supply house so I could let loose of some fury in a comfortable location. My favorite store as a matter of fact is Home Depot. I like Home depot not for their prices on roof shingles. I like Home Depot for their clean bathrooms and the fact that I do not have to deal with some salesman behind a high counter that does not really know the products or the roofing business. I will keep this quite simple. I am currently listening to a marketing guru Anthony Sarno former Lucent executive. He has been kind to me in leading me through the maze of internet marketing. We discuss marketing and sales and we were chatting about what I was recently pissed off about. No pun intended. I explained how… Read More →
